1. The short description of idea.

In this article the simple, cheap and very effective technical decision providing protection against a dust of internal volume of the system block of the computer is offered and considered. Application of this decision bears essential technical and economic advantages to end users of computers, manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and some completing (cases, fans, video cards, processors, etc.), support services. For users it allows to raise reliability of work and to increase considerably service life of components of the system block by the very small price. Manufacturers, collectors and sellers will essentially lower costs on guarantee service and repair, will raise the competitive advantages and can easily derive considerable additional profit correct use of advantages of the decision and corresponding advertising, including free of charge.

Introduction of offered idea in mass production will help manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and some completing to raise essentially prestigiousness, competitiveness, a technical level, quality and reliability of let out production. For realization of potential of offered idea there will be enough a minimum advertising and marketing support.

The idea essence consists in application of flat filtering elements of automobile air filters. These filtering elements (further - filters) are established in front of involving fans or on an input of air streams in the case. On fig.1 the typical inexpensive case of Tower type (V-Tech 107MB) with instructions of installation sites of filters is represented.

Fig.1. Case V-Tech 107MB and installation sites of filters.

*Cut on the decorative forward panel is shown conditionally for convenience of consideration.

The big lateral filter is established and fastens from within on the demountable left lateral panel of the case, blocking ventilating windows for the processor and expansion cards. The ventilating pipe opposite to the processor is dismantled.

The small face filter is established in an internal cavity of the bottom part of the decorative forward panel before a protective lattice of the involving fan. The filter fastens on the metal forward panel of the chassis.

Filters can be easily established on the majority of let out models of Tower cases without entering of any changes into their design and decorating. Thus cheap models of cases with a standard typical design appear the most suitable to installation.

At installation of filters it is even not obligatory to provide the mechanism of their fastening. Filters can be simply pasted for its rubber sealants to metal panels of the case any suitable universal elastic glue. In need of replacement of the filter the end user cuts off or tears off the filter from the metal panel, and on its place pastes the new.

Thus, the given technical decision can be easily realized as forces of interested end users, and in mass production by large manufacturers of cases and collectors of ready systems.

2. Advantages of the offered decision.

The given technical decision possesses a number of doubtless serious advantages.

In the given section of article these advantages are listed in detail.

The short list of advantages is resulted in "The short description of article" and in item 7 ("Conclusion").

2.1. Advantages to end users:

1. High efficiency of protection against a dust of internal volume of the case. The effect is swept most up at often meeting installation of the system block of the computer on a floor.

2. Substantial growth of service life of components of the system block. Service life of fans, especially cheap with sleeve bearings, can increase several times. It means uninterrupted effective cooling of the most thermoloaded and simultaneously the most expensive components - the central processor, a video card, a power unit, a hard disk. Qualitative cooling of these components prevents their overheat and premature failure.

3. Application of filters practically does not reduce a cooling system effectiveness. It is connected by that filters have low dynamic resistance to a moving air stream.

4. Considerable decrease in effect of "ageing" of system of cooling. The raised effectiveness of system of cooling throughout long time in comparison with system without filters. It is connected by that in systems without filters the dust takes a picked up in an air stream of fans and in considerable quantities gets on radiators of cooled devices (the central processor, a video card, a power unit). After a while the intercostal space of radiators is filled by a dust, and efficiency of cooling considerably worsens. Besides, the dust gets to bearings of fans of system of cooling that leads to their premature deterioration, jamming and failure. All it can lead to an overheat of cooled devices, their premature ageing and failure. Application of filters allows to avoid these troubles.

5. Long service life of filters. Automobile filters are intended on intensive operation in hard road conditions, and will really work in soft conditions of the house or office.

6. Periodic cleaning of filters or internal volume of the case is not required.

7. Low cost. The retail price of two not original automobile filters can make less than 10 USD.

2.2. Advantages to manufacturers and sellers of cases and ready systems:

1. An easy way of increase of a technological level and appeal of production in highly competitive market environment.

2. Easy possibility of free effective advertising. To the trade mark, the name or number of model of the case it is enough to add of something of type «with eXCELLENT Air / DUST Filter», «Xtreme DUST Filter», etc. The information on application of filters can be placed largely and colourfully on packing of cases and ready systems.

3. Easy possibility of extraction of additional profit. The difference in cost between the usual and improved versions of the case can exceed wholesale cost of filters considerably. It is fair and for the cheapest, and in particular for elite models of cases.

4. Sale of cases without complete power units, but with filters for identical or there is some reduced price, will appear a successful marketing course, probably.

5. It is not necessary to bring any changes in existing designs of serially manufactured cases. Filters can be easily established on the majority of models of cases of Tower type. It will be more low shown, that installation is possible even on some models of cases which, apparently, absolutely for this purpose do not applicable.

6. It is very important, that cheap models of cases with a standard typical design appear the most suitable to installation. Sales volumes of such cases are maximum. Taken by manufacturers and sellers the total profit on sales also is maximum. It means, what exactly on such cases installation of air filters first of all is expedient, since it is equitable to interests of end users, manufacturers and sellers.

7. The decorating of cases does not change. The established filters visually are not visible, since settle inside the case.

8. It is not necessary to provide the mechanism of fastening of filters. Filters can be pasted for rubber sealants to metal panels of the case any suitable universal elastic glue. In need of replacement of the filter the end user cuts off or tears off it from the panel, and on its place pastes the new. Such way of fastening means the maximum simplicity for the manufacturer and convenience of selection of filters with the alternative sizes for users.

9. It is not necessary to installation of filters on manufacturer. At case packing simply enough to put in its internal cavity filters in their original packings from a cardboard, a tube with glue and the short scheme-instruction on installation. Filters will be independently pasted by collectors of computers or end users. The manufacturer of the case can present this fact to instructions on installation as a side benefit: the user can independently choose or effective protection against a dust, or the maximum air stream.

10. The broadest assortment of models and standard sizes of automobile filters allows to pick up on many interchangeable models of filters almost for any case.

11. Release of filters commercially and a considerable quantity of manufacturers of stereotyped (compatible) production in many countries of the world promote low wholesale and to retail prices, easy availability of filters to the order and purchase as manufacturers of cases, and end users.

2.3. Long-term advantages and consequences to the computer industry:

1. Simplification of performance of guarantee certificates and decrease in accompanying financial expenses for manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and some components: fans, processors, power units and especially video cards. Modern video cards of average and top price ranges have very high thermal emission. It compels manufacturers to apply the effective and compact systems of cooling having radiators with high long ridges and very narrow intercostal intervals. Such intervals are quickly hammered by a dust, that considerably reduces efficiency of cooling and can lead to a video card exit out of operation because of its overheat. Considering the raised guarantee periods (till 5 years) on these products and their vulnerability before dust pollution, manufacturers and sellers can face after a while a significant amount of the video cards which have failed because of an overheat, and demanding repair or replacement on a guarantee. Application of filters will help to lower considerably number of such cases and to reduce financial expenses of manufacturers, collectors and sellers by guarantee repair or replacement of video cards.

2. The given point follows from the previous. Collectors of ready systems, irrespective of manufacture scales, can give the raised guarantee periods on production. It will raise its appeal in highly competitive market environment. Thus financial expenses for guarantee support will not increase; moreover, they can even decrease. It is connected by that application of filters considerably will increase service life of fans and cooling systems, and, hence, will prolong time of non-failure operation of the most thermoloaded and simultaneously the most expensive components of the system block: the processor, a system board (partially cooled by a processor cooler), video cards, a hard disk (cooled by own cooler or a passing stream of air of case fans), a power unit.

3. The increase in time of non-failure operation of various components reduces loading on repair services which very often happen unprofitable.

4. Manufacturers of cases and cooling systems, and also collectors of ready systems can fearlessly apply cheap fans with sleeve bearings. Application of filters considerably will increase their life time. For completing and ready systems of an average and top price range it is expedient to use inexpensive models of fans with double ball bearings or hydrobearings. Application of filters will provide with it lifelong service life in ready system.

5. In the large organisations repair services carry out periodic service of park of computer technics. This service includes clearing of a dust of internal volume of system blocks, greasing of bearings or replacement of the worn out fans. All it allows to raise reliability of work and to prolong service life of computer technics. At the same time service attracts behind itself periodic idle times of users and the equipment (on a holding time of service), the inexpedient expense of time of highly skilled personnel, harm drawing to its health (because of a considerable quantity of a dust in system blocks its part at clearing inevitably gets with breath to lungs). Application of filters allows to exclude these kinds of works at service or to carry out them much less often.

6. The increase in time of non-failure operation of various components will allow to lower a little their manufacture that will reduce environmental contamination by manufacture new and recyclings of the failed components.

On it the short description of idea and its advantages comes to an end. Further in article various aspects of practical realisation of this idea are in detail considered.

3. Dangers of dust pollution of internal volume of the system block.

Is well known, that air system of cooling of computers has characteristic unpleasant feature - fast dust pollution of internal volume of the system block and electronic components being there.

The dust pollution carries, at least, three basic dangers:

1. The dust which is carried away by an air stream of fans, in considerable quantities gets on radiators of cooled devices (the central processor, a video card, a power unit). After a while the intercostal space of radiators is hammered by a dust, and efficiency of cooling considerably worsens. It can lead to an overheat of cooled devices, their presenilation and failure. Most sharply this problem costs for modern power-intensive thermoloaded components, especially the video cards having radiators with high long ridges and very narrow intercostal intervals.

2. The dust gets sooner or later to bearings of fans of system of cooling. It leads to their premature deterioration, jamming and as consequence - to an exit of fans out of operation. Widely used cheap fans with sleeve bearings are especially vulnerable. The stop of fans can lead to an overheat and failure of cooled electronic components.

3. The dust settles on contacts of not used sockets and expansions slots (PCI, PCI Express, memory modules). Further, at installation in these slots the expansion cards, the settled small dust can worsen quality of electric contacts. It can lead to astable work of again established devices.

And if last danger, most likely, only potential, first two are quite real.

In connection with presence listed above dangers some manufacturers, collectors and repair services recommend to users of personal computers to perform preventive works periodically. As a rule, it is clearing of internal volume of the system block of a dust by means of a vacuum cleaner and greasing of bearings of fans. Recommended periodicity of works makes, as a rule, 3... 6 months.

In practice to count on performance of these recommendations it is possible only in corporate sector. In sectors of small firms and home PCs the majority of users, most likely, at all does not suspect that computers need to be cleared of a dust. And it is especially heavy to present to itself, that the usual user will assort the system block of the computer and to take some components for periodic greasing of bearings of fans :). Meanwhile in home PCs powerful expensive power-intensive thermoloaded components are established, exacting to efficiency and reliability of system of cooling.

Performance of preventive works in corporate sector also has a number of lacks. These are periodic idle times of users and the equipment (on a holding time of service), the inexpedient expense of time of highly skilled personnel, harm drawing to its health (because of a considerable quantity of a dust in system blocks its part at clearing inevitably gets with breath to lungs).

4. The technical decisions applied by manufacturers of cases.

Last years developers and manufacturers of cases have started to apply the technical decisions reducing the dust pollution of internal volume of the system block. Basically these decisions represent the elementary the anti-dust air filters established in front of involving fans or on an input of air streams in the case. As filters are usually used a small-cellular grid from plastic or metal, or thin sheets of the made foam polymer (fig.2 pos.1, 2, 3).

Fig.2. Cases Thermaltake Armor and Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01.

However such design of filters has essential lacks:

1. The small-cellular grid detains only large particles of pollution, for example, fibres. The small dust, as a rule, easily overcomes such filter.

2. Quality of clearing can be improved considerably. For this purpose it is possible to reduce the size of cells of a grid, to apply instead of a grid a fabric or sheets of the made foam polymer. However because of the small area of the filter such decision will result in repeated increase in dynamic resistance of the filter to a moving air stream. As a result efficiency of ventilation and cooling considerably decreases.

3. Dynamic resistance of the filter to a moving air stream can be reduced, having increased the area of a surface of the filter (fig. 3, 4, 5).

Fig.3. Case Cooler Master Stacker RC-830.

Fig.4. Case Codegen 6078L-CA Aeolus.

Fig.5. Case SuperPower Briz A Series E-6097.

However and these decisions have a lack - the raised noise level. In usual cases metal panels reflect and muffle the noise generated by fans, a hard disk, optical drives. And in cases with the big ventilating windows these noise are free radiated outside. Besides, in these cases the following lack is not eliminated.

4. If the air filter from small-cellular grids, a fabric or the made foam polymer is established closely in front of the usual centrifugal fan, it leads to considerable decline of productivity of the fan and noise level increase. The reasons are, as it is noted above, the small area of the filter (directly ahead of the fan) and its big dynamic resistance to a moving air stream, and also the low static pressure developed by the fan.

So, the typical technical decisions applied now by developers and manufacturers of cases, at all their simplicity and cheapness, possess essential lacks. They or do not provide qualitative clearing of a dust, or reduce a cooling system effectiveness.

And the most important thing - manufacturers let out very few models of the cases equipped with anti-dust air filters. Basically it is exclusive models with the high price. And in mass sector of suitable variants - units, i.e. practically are not present.

5. The description of the offered technical decision.

5.1. An idea essence - use of flat automobile air filters.

More low the simple, cheap and effective technical decision providing effective protection against a dust and deprived of lacks, peculiar to typical decisions, now in use is offered.

The idea essence consists in application of flat filtering elements of automobile air filters (fig.6). These filtering elements (further - filters) are established in front of involving fans or on an input of air streams in the case.

Fig.6. Typical flat automobile air filters.

The typical flat automobile air filter (fig.7) consists of two basic elements:

1. A paper filtering element (fig.7 pos.1), the collected in a volume design in the form of set of goffers with small heights h. Such design provides repeated increase in the area of a surface of the filter at small to length a and width b.

2. A thick rubber sealant (fig.7 pos.2), providing integrity of a design and the employee for filter fastening to a flat surface.

Fig.7. Flat automobile air filter - design, sizes, fastening.

Let's note the important design feature of flat automobile air filters. At the majority of models of filters the paper filtering element is on some distance dH (an order of 10 mm) on axis Z from the top plane of a rubber sealant (fig.7 pos.2). It means, that the flat panel (fig.7 pos.3) on which the filter the rubber sealant fastens, can have a ventilating window (fig.7 pos.4) which sizes can be much less lengths a and width b the filter (fig.7). Thus air, having entered through a small ventilating window, will almost in regular intervals be distributed on all surface of the filter thanks to an air backlash in height dH between a paper filtering element and a plane of fastening of the filter (a rubber sealant of the filter - the flat panel).

Importance of this design feature consists that at installation of filters of the big size it is possible to use small ventilating windows already available in the case. This question will be in addition considered more low in item 5.10Fastening and some other questions of installation of filters»).

5.2. Installation of filters in typical case Tower of specification TAC 1.1.

In the typical case Tower, executed according to specification Thermally Advantaged Chassis (TAC) version 1.1 (PDF 583KB), entering air streams three (fig.8):

1. Through the bottom part of the decorative forward panel (and the optional involving fan provided by manufacturers for the majority of models of cases);

2. Through a ventilating window and a pipe opposite to the processor in the demountable left lateral panel;

3. Through a ventilating window opposite to expansion cards in the demountable left lateral panel.

Fig. 8. Typical case Tower TAC 1.1 and distribution of air streams in it.

Let's consider installation of filters on an example of typical inexpensive case Tower of type V-Tech 107MB. Appearance of the case and an installation site of filters are shown on fig.9. The internal device of the case is shown on fig.10.

Fig.9. Case V-Tech 107MB and installation sites of filters.

*Cut on the decorative forward panel is shown conditionally for convenience of consideration.

Fig. 10. The internal device of case V-Tech 107MB.

5.3. The big lateral filter - installation variants.

The big lateral filter (fig.11 pos.5) is established and fastens for a rubber sealant (fig.11 pos.6) from within on the demountable left lateral panel of the case (fig.11 pos.1). Thus ventilating windows for the processor (fig.11 pos.2) and expansion cards (fig.11 pos.3) are completely blocked by the filter. The ventilating pipe (fig.11 pos.4) opposite to the processor, attached to the left lateral panel, is dismantled. Thus, the lateral filter is in an internal cavity of the case between expansion cards and the left lateral panel.

Fig. 11. Installation of the big lateral filter on the demountable left lateral panel of the case.

Dismantle of a ventilating pipe opposite to the processor breaks recommendations TAC version 1.1 (PDF 583KB). However in February, 2008 new version TAC 2.0 (PDF 287KB) which does not mean pipe presence has been offered. The additional information on the new version will be resulted more low in item 5.12Cases Tower of specification TAC 2.0»).

As after dismantle of a ventilating pipe on the demountable left lateral panel of the case there will be two ventilating windows - opposite to the processor (fig.12à pos.1, fig.13à pos.1) and on the contrary expansion cards (fig.12à pos.2, fig.13à pos.2) two configurations of the lateral filter are possible:

1. Two individual small lateral filters are used: the first - opposite to a ventilating window of the processor, the second - opposite to a ventilating window of expansion cards (fig.12 b, c). Filters can be a miscellaneous (fig.12b) or identical (fig. 12c) the size.

2. One general big lateral filter is used. This filter blocks both ventilating windows at once (fig. 11, 13b, 13c). The given variant is more preferable, as the area of a surface of one big filter will appear more than the total area of surfaces of two small filters. Fastening of the filter besides, will become simpler and total cost of the decision will decrease.

Fig.13 a,b,c. Installation site of the general lateral filter.

5.4. The big lateral filter - length and width.

The sizes of the lateral filter (filters) should satisfy to certain conditions.

The minimum length and width of the lateral filter should be such that its rubber sealant completely blocked apertures of ventilating windows opposite to the processor and expansion cards (fig.12b, 13b).

The maximum length and width of the lateral filter are limited from each of the parties to following factors:

From above - a power unit (fig.14 pos.4) or the longitudinal edge of the case supporting a power unit (in the given case of this edge is not present).

In front - a basket of optical drives and devices of 5,25 inches (fig.14 pos.5).

From below - a longitudinal edge of rigidity in the bottom part of the demountable left lateral panel (fig.14 pos.1) or a longitudinal edge at the bottom of the case (fig.14 pos.6).

Behind - a vertical edge in a back part of the case (fig.14 pos.7), a vertical edge in a back part of the demountable left lateral panel (fig.14 pos.2) and the fan on the back panel of the case (fig.14 pos.8). On back shift of the demountable left lateral panel the additional stock is besides, necessary for its removal-installation (an order 10... 15 mm).

Fig.14. The factors limiting the maximum sizes of the lateral filter.

Besides, for the minimum both maximum length and width of the lateral filter the various relief elements located on the demountable left lateral panel can influence. It can be cambers and rigidity edges (fig.15 pos.1, 2, 3), the handle (fig.15 pos.4), volume inscriptions (fig.15 pos.5). The sizes and an arrangement of the lateral filter should be such that its rubber sealant did not settle down on these relief elements (fig. 12, 13, 15).

Fig.15. The additional factors limiting the sizes of the lateral filter.

The most preferable variant - to use the filter of the greatest possible size (fig.13) which area of a surface will be maximum.

5.5. The big lateral filter - height and orientation of ridges (goffers).

The maximum height of ridges (goffers) the lateral filter should not exceed distance from a plane of the demountable left lateral panel to the top edge of expansion cards. It is conditionally possible to accept, that this edge is on 10 mm more close to a plane of the left lateral panel, than a shelf for screw fastening of metal laths of expansion cards (fig.14 pos.3). For the majority of models of cases the distance d between a shelf and the left lateral panel makes from 50 to 70 mm. Hence, the maximum height of ridges (goffers) the filter will make (50... 70) - 10 = 40... 60 mm. However this value can be increased if to turn the filter so that its ridges (goffers) were orientation horizontally, i.e. from a back wall of the case to a lobby (fig.14 pos.9). At such orientation even in case of use of high expansion cards there will be no problems of their placing as upper edges of expansion cards will take places between flexible ridges (goffers) of the filter, if necessary it is a little of them having moved apart.

5.6. The small face filter - installation and the sizes.

The small face filter (fig.16 pos.4) is established in an internal cavity of the bottom part of the decorative forward panel (fig.16 pos.1) of case before a protective lattice (fig.16 pos.3) the involving fan. Cut on the forward panel is shown conditionally for convenience of consideration. Really in a design and decorating of the case it is not brought any changes.

The rubber sealant (fig.16 pos.5) the face filter fastens on an external side of the metal forward panel of the chassis (fig.16 pos.2).

The face involving fan fastens standardly - on an internal side of the metal forward panel of the chassis. More in detail this question is considered in item 5.11Face and rear (back) fans - a choice and installation») and on fig.19.

Fig.16. Installation of the small face filter in the decorative forward panel.

*Cut on the decorative forward panel is shown conditionally for convenience of consideration.

The minimum length and width of the face filter should be such, that its rubber sealant completely blocked apertures of a protective lattice (fig.16 pos.3) the involving fan.

The maximum length and width of the face filter, and also height of its ridges (goffers) are defined by the sizes of an internal cavity of the decorative forward panel of the case in which the filter is established.

The most preferable variant - to use the filter of the greatest possible size which area of a surface will be maximum.

Some constructive elements, located on the decorative forward panel or in its internal cavity (for example, buttons, indicators, sockets, circuit boards, etc.), can affect to placing and the sizes of the face filter. More in detail this question is considered in item 5.8The small face filter - dependence of placing on an arrangement of constructive elements of the decorative forward panel of the case»).

Design features of some models of cases do not allow to establish the face filter. Besides, for some designs of the decorative forward panel it will not be possible to pick up the suitable face filter because of the limited nomenclature of the sizes of automobile air filters. Variants of the decision of this problem are in detail considered more low in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation»).

5.7. The small face filter - orientation of ridges (goffers).

The direction of orientation of ridges (goffers) the face filter should be chosen depending on an arrangement air-intaking windows on the decorative forward panel of the case (fig.17). Correct orientation of ridges (goffers) of the filter provides fuller use of its surface and promotes reduction of dynamic resistance of the filter to a moving air stream.

In the majority of designs of the forward panel the basic air stream comes from below (fig.17a, direct.1), therefore it is expedient to direct filter ridges (goffers) vertically. If the air stream comes sideways (fig.17b, direct.2), it is necessary to direct ridges (goffers) horizontally. If the air stream comes through a decorative ventilating lattice on an obverse part of the forward panel (fig.17c, direct.3) - orientation, obviously, either has no value, or depends on presence and an arrangement additional air-intaking windows from below or sideways the forward panel (fig.17b, direct.2; fig.17c, direct.1).

Fig.17 a,b,c. Dependence of orientation of ridges (goffers) the face filter

from an arrangement of air-intaking windows on the forward panel

on an example of cases COLORSit ATX-L8007, KME CX-8158, Foxconn TLA-570A.

From the point of view of efficiency of cooling the most preferable is the arrangement of a decorative ventilating lattice on an obverse part of the forward panel (fig.17c). However while in service the ventilating lattice will intensively become covered by a dust which is required to be deleted (wipe) periodically. The same lack will be shown and at an arrangement of ventilating windows on each side the decorative forward panel (fig.17b). Therefore from the practical point of view the arrangement of air-intaking windows from below the decorative forward panel of the case (fig.17a) provided that this window will have the sufficient area can appear the most preferable.

Some constructive elements, located on the decorative forward panel or in its internal cavity (for example, buttons, indicators, sockets, circuit boards, etc.), can affect to orientation of ridges (goffers) of the face filter. More in detail this question is considered in item 5.8The small face filter - dependence of placing on an arrangement of constructive elements of the decorative forward panel of the case»).

5.8. The small face filter - dependence of placing on an arrangement

of constructive elements of the decorative forward panel of the case.

Placing, the sizes and orientation of ridges (goffers) the face filter, certainly, depend on presence, placing and the sizes of the every possible constructive elements located on the decorative forward panel of the case or in its internal cavity. These elements include, for example, buttons, indicators, sockets, circuit boards, edges of rigidity, a rack, etc.

In the majority of models of cases these elements, as a rule, do not stir basic possibility of installation of the face filter. For example, cases, contacts and wires of buttons and indicators can easily take places between flexible ridges (goffers) the filter, if necessary it is a little of them having moved apart. However, for an exception of mutual conflicts, probably, it is necessary to modify an arrangement and the sizes of the face filter, and also orientation of its ridges (goffers).

Fig. 18. Dependence of orientation of ridges (goffers) the face filter from its sizes

and an arrangement of constructive elements in the decorative forward panel

in case COLORSit ATX-L8032.

For example, in case COLORSit ATX-L8032 (fig.18) at use of the filter of the minimum sizes of its ridges (goffers) can occupy any orientation. And at the maximum sizes of the filter it is desirable to choose horizontal orientation of its ridges (goffers). It is connected with presence of the high circuit board on which sockets of ports USB and Audio (fig.18 pos.1) are soldered. If ridges (goffers) the face filter are directed horizontally, the circuit board will take places between them. The block of the indicator and the on/off button (fig.18 pos.2) also can demand horizontal orientation of ridges (goffers) of the filter. In this case uppermost ridges (goffers) of the filter it is a little bent downwards, having provided normal placing of the block.

5.9. The small face filter - impossibility of installation.

Design features of some models of cases do not allow to establish the face filter. Besides, for some designs of the decorative forward panel it will not be possible to pick up the suitable face filter because of the limited nomenclature of the sizes of automobile air filters.

Examples of such cases (Foxconn TH-61, Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01, Cooler Master Stacker RC-830, Thermaltake Armor) are considered more low in item 6.3The cases conditionally approaching for installation of filters») and item 6.4Installation of filters in elite cases»).

In such cases 3 variants of the decision of a problem are possible:

1. As the face filter the piece a self-glued porous material is established by thickness 5...20 mm. The face involving fan fastens standardly - on an internal side of the metal forward panel of the chassis (fig.16 pos.2, fig.19). The filter from a porous material, unlike automobile filter, possesses the big dynamic resistance to a moving air stream. Therefore such decision considerably will reduce the air stream which is passing through the face filter. It will worsen cooling of hard disks. However the basic air stream comes in the case through the big lateral filter. Therefore efficiency of cooling of other components of the system block will not worsen almost.

2. The face filter fastens not on external, and on an internal side of the metal forward panel of the chassis (fig.16 pos.2) instead of the face fan. The face fan is not established.

3. The face filter is not established. The face fan is established turned on 180 degrees so that it worked not on having blown in the case, and on having blown from the case through the forward panel. Thus hard disks will be cooled by filtered warm air from within the system block, arrived inside through the lateral filter.

Any of these decisions leads to increase of temperature of hard disks. Theoretically it considerably reduces term of their life. However according to results of researches Google (PDF 241KB) published in February, 2007, for hard disks their working temperature within 30...40 Celsius degrees is optimum. Rise in temperature above 45 Celsius degrees is negatively reflected in reliability of work of disks only after 3 years of their operation. Therefore in case of a normal temperature mode in the case (in office computers, in the absence of components with an extreme thermal emission, at optimum system of ventilation) it is possible not to be afraid of these decisions.

When the face fan is not established, for cooling of hard disks on them it is necessary to establish special coolers for HDD.

5.10. Fastening and some other questions of installation of filters.

Filters can be easily established on the majority of models of serially manufactured cases of type Tower. Installation of filters does not demand entering of any changes into existing designs and an decorating of these cases.

For example, at installation of the lateral filter there is no necessity as-or to change ventilating windows for the processor and expansions cards the located on the demountable left lateral panel of the case. It is not required to increase the area of these windows or to establish their sizes according to the sizes of the filter. It is connected by that at the majority of models of flat automobile air filters the paper filtering element is on some distance dH (an order of 10 mm) from a plane of a rubber sealant (fig.7). Therefore air, having entered through small ventilating windows on the demountable left lateral panel of the case (fig. 7, 12c, 13c, 21c), will be distributed on all surface of the filter thanks to an air backlash between a paper filtering element and a plane of fastening of the filter (a rubber sealant of the filter - the left lateral panel of the case). This question has been considered above in item 5.1An idea essence - use of flat automobile air filters»).

At installation of filters it is not obligatory to provide the mechanism of their fastening. Filters can be pasted for rubber sealants (fig.11 pos.6, fig.16 pos.5) to metal panels of the case (fig.11 pos.1, fig.16 pos.2) any suitable universal elastic glue. In need of replacement of the filter the end user cuts off or tears off the filter from the metal panel, and on its place pastes the new.

In the working system block extorting fans on a back wall of the case and in a power unit create in the case the lowered pressure of air. Therefore for an exception of hit of crude air in the case bypassing filters in cases with the established filters it is necessary to close all superfluous cracks of the considerable area (fig.23 pos.3, fig.25 pos.4, fig.27 pos.4). The crack can stick with a strip of an adhesive tape or, that is more preferable, a self-glued porous material in the thickness 2...5 mm. Manufacturers of cases can put such material in the complete set of delivery of cases with filters. More in detail this question is considered more low in the items 6.2 and 6.3 by consideration of cases Foxconn TLA-570A, COLORSit ATX-L8007 and Foxconn TH-61.

Design features of some models of cases do not allow to establish the face filter. Besides, for some designs of the decorative forward panel it will not be possible to pick up the suitable face filter because of the limited nomenclature of the sizes of automobile air filters. Variants of the decision of this problem are in detail considered above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation»).

5.11. Face and rear (back) fans - a choice and installation.

In cases with filters persistently it is recommended to establish the additional fans provided by a design of the case: face involving (fig.19) on the forward panel and rear extorting (fig.14 pos.8) on the back panel of the case. It will strengthen air stream through the system block, will improve cooling of components and will compensate small dynamic resistance of filters to a moving air stream. Besides, absence of the rear fan will result to that the considerable part of an air stream will enter through a ventilating lattice of this fan bypassing filters, that, certainly, unacceptably.

As already it has been noted above, the face involving fan fastens standardly - on an internal side of the metal forward panel of the chassis (fig.19). It is expedient to use the fan of the greatest possible size provided by a design of the case. Thus speed of wings rotation the fan should be small for noise level decrease.

Fig.19 a,b. Installation of the face involving fan

on an example of cases V-Tech 107MB and Foxconn TLA-570A.

For example, case V-Tech 107MB (fig.19a) as the face allows to use fans of standard sizes 80x80x25, 92x92x25, 120x120x25 and 140x140x25 mm. Fans 140x140x25 mm are for the present insufficiently widespread and have high cost. Therefore in the given case it is expedient to establish standard size model 120x120x25 mm with low speed of rotation. A suitable variant is, for example, inexpensive qualitative fan GlacialTech GT12025-BDLA1 (GaleMotor GMA12025B12L). Its short characteristics: 2 ball bearning, speed of rotation of 950 rpm, an air stream 36 CFM, static pressure 0,75 mm H2O, noise level 18dBA, a power supplies 12Â 0,12À, time to failure of 50 000 hours. The Retail price in Russia of an order 4 Euros or $6.

Case Foxconn TLA-570A (fig.19b) as the face allows to use fans only one standard size - 80x80x25 mm. These fans have higher speed of wings rotation, than standard size models 120x120x25 mm that leads to the raised noise level. However, the nomenclature of manufactured models is very wide, that allows to pick up a suitable variant.

Design features of some models of cases do not allow to establish the face fan. The example of such case (Foxconn TH-61) is considered more low in item 6.3The cases conditionally approaching for installation of filters»). In the majority of designs of cases the face fan provides cooling of hard disks. Therefore at impossibility of its installation for cooling of hard disks on them it is necessary to establish special coolers for HDD.

At a choice rear extorting fan (fig.14 pos.8) located on the back panel of the case, it is necessary to be guided by the same principles, as at a choice of the face fan. I.e. it is expedient to use the fan of the greatest possible size provided by a design of the case. Thus speed of wings rotation the fan should be small for noise level decrease.

As filtering elements of automobile filters pass light, it is possible to use fans with LED illumination (fig.19). It will make the case more attractive.

5.12. Cases Tower of specification TAC 2.0.

As it has been noted above, in February, 2008 the new version 2.0 (PDF 287KB) of specification Thermally Advantaged Chassis (TAC) has been offered to developers and manufacturers of computer cases. Within the limits of cases in point its two differences are most interesting to us from TAC to the version 1.1 (PDF 583KB):

1. The ventilating pipe (fig.11 pos.4) opposite to the processor, attached to the left lateral panel (fig.11 pos.1) any more is not required.

2. Ventilating windows on the left lateral panel of the case opposite to the processor (fig.12 pos.1, fig.13 pos.1) and on the contrary expansion cards (fig.12 pos.2, fig.13 pos.2) are united in one big window (fig.20, fig.21 pos.1).

No changes on the forward panel are present.

The typical case Tower executed according to version 2.0 TAC, and distribution of air streams in it are represented on fig.20.

Entering air streams became two:

1. Through the bottom and lateral parts of the decorative forward panel of the case (and the optional involving fan provided by manufacturers for the majority of models of cases);

2. Through a ventilating window in the demountable left lateral panel of the case.

Fig.20. Typical case Tower TAC 2.0 and distribution of air streams in it.

As on the demountable left lateral panel of the case now there is only one ventilating window (fig.21 pos.1), it simplifies a problem of a choice of the filter since its sizes can vary in wider limits (fig. 21 b,c), than at the cases corresponding TAC to version 1.1 (fig. 12, 13).

Fig.21 a,b,c. Installation site of the lateral filter in case Tower TAC 2.0.

Thus, the typical cases Tower corresponding to specification Thermally Advantaged Chassis (TAC) of version 2.0, appear even more suitable to installation of filters, than the cases corresponding TAC to version 1.1.

6. Examples of installation of filters in serially manufactured cases Tower.

6.1. The general questions of installation of filters.

As it has been noted above, filters can be easily established on the majority of models of serially manufactured cases of type Tower. Installation of filters does not demand entering of any changes into existing designs of cases.

Decorating of cases also does not change, since filters settle down in the case and outside are not visible. At close examination it will be possible to see only ridges (goffers) filters through apertures of ventilating windows on the decorative forward panel of the case and on the demountable left lateral panel of the case. At the majority of models of flat automobile air filters the paper filtering element is painted in yellow, orange or pink colour. Therefore under certain conditions, for example, for black cases, appearance of the case with the established filters can become even more intriguing.

One of examples of such cases is considered above V-Tech 107MB.

Installation of filters on other characteristic variants both cheap, and expensive elite models of cases will be more low considered.

Let's remind, that in cases with filters persistently it is recommended to establish the additional fans provided by a design of the case: face involving (fig.19) on the forward panel and rear extorting (fig.14 pos.8) on the back panel of the case. This question has been considered above in item 5.11Face and rear (back) fans - a choice and installation»).

Design features of some models of cases do not allow to establish the face filter and / or the face fan. Besides, for some designs of the decorative forward panel it will not be possible to pick up the suitable face filter because of the limited nomenclature of the sizes of automobile air filters. Variants of the decision of these problems are in detail considered above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation») and item 5.11Face and rear (back) fans - a choice and installation»).

6.2. The cases well approaching for installation of filters.

COLORSit ATX-L8032 and Foxconn TLA-570A.

On fig.22 installation of filters in case COLORSit ATX-L8032 is shown. The case well approaches for installation.

The demountable left lateral panel of the case is very convenient. She allows to establish the lateral filter with big enough range of the sizes. Unique restriction is the relief handle (fig.22 pos.1). It is necessary to consider, however, that some models and parties of cases COLORSit are delivered with the demountable left lateral panel which completely not have ventilating windows. More low in item 6.3 and on fig.25 one of such cases - COLORSit ATX-L8007 will be considered.

The decorative forward panel of case COLORSit ATX-L8032 also is successful enough. The basic air stream comes in front through a ventilating lattice (fig.22 pos.4) on an obverse part of the forward panel (the most preferable variant by efficiency of cooling). The additional air stream comes from below through a window (fig.22 pos.5) in the bottom part of the forward panel. Therefore at the small sizes of the face filter it is expedient to direct its ridges (goffers) vertically. However in an internal cavity of the decorative forward panel are high enough the circuit board with sockets of ports USB and Audio (fig.18 pos.1, fig.22 pos.2) and the block of the indicator with the on/of button (fig.18 pos.2, fig.22 pos.3). Therefore at the considerable sizes of the face filter of its ridges (goffers) it is necessary to direct horizontally (fig.22). More in detail this question is considered above in item 5.8The small face filter - dependence of placing on an arrangement of constructive elements of the decorative forward panel of the case») and on fig.18.

Besides lateral and face filters, case COLORSit ATX-L8032 allows to establish the additional bottom filter located at the bottom of the case. More in detail this question is considered more low at case COLORSit ATX-L8007 description in item 6.3 and on fig.26.

Fig. 22. Installation of filters in case COLORSit ATX-L8032.

On fig. 23, 24 installation of filters in case Foxconn TLA-570A is shown. The case well approaches for installation.

The demountable left lateral panel of the case (fig.23) is convenient enough. At a choice and installation of the lateral filter it is necessary to consider presence of relief elements on the panel. It is the handle (fig.23 pos.1) and cambers on a platform of installation of a ventilating pipe for the processor (fig.23 pos.2).

Besides, in a forward part of the demountable left lateral panel there is a vertical row of additional ventilating apertures (fig.23 pos.3). The same apertures are and on the demountable right lateral panel of the case. These apertures do not play an essential role in computer cooling, therefore for an exception of penetration of a dust it is necessary to stick with their strip of an adhesive tape or, that is more preferable, a self-glued porous material in the thickness 2...5 mm. It should be done both for left, and for right lateral panels. It is expedient to manufacturer of the case to put two strips of such material in the complete set of delivery of the case with filters.

Fig.23. Installation of the lateral filter in case Foxconn TLA-570A.

The decorative forward panel of case Foxconn TLA-570A (fig.24) very well approaches for installation of the face filter. The unique terminator of the sizes of the filter are two high plastic racks (fig.24 pos.2). The circuit board with sockets of ports USB and Audio (fig.24 pos.1) is above a zone of an arrangement of the filter and consequently does not stir to its installation. Cases of indicators and the on/off button (fig.24 pos.3) have the small area in cross-section section. Therefore they easily settle down between ridges (goffers) the face filter irrespective of a direction of orientation of ridges (goffers).

Fig.24. Installation of the face filter in case Foxconn TLA-570A.

The air stream comes in front through four ventilating windows (fig.24 pos.4) on an obverse part of the forward panel (the most preferable variant by efficiency of cooling). The additional ventilating window of the considerable sizes is located in the bottom part of the forward panel (fig.24 pos.5). Through this window there passes a considerable part of an air stream, therefore the face filter it is expedient to direct ridges (goffers) vertically. However, horizontal orientation also is admissible.

6.3. The cases conditionally approaching for installation of filters.

COLORSit ATX-L8007 and Foxconn TH-61.

On fig. 25, 26 installation of filters in case COLORSit ATX-L8007 is shown. The case conditionally approaches for installation.

The demountable left lateral panel of the case does not allow to establish the lateral filter. The panel practically is completely similar used in case COLORSit ATX-L8032 (item 6.2 and fig.22), but, unfortunately, is deprived ventilating windows opposite to the processor and expansion cards. Places of a possible arrangement of these absent windows are shown on fig.25 pos.2 and pos.3. To all appearances, the manufacturer can complete some models and parties of cases COLORSit with various variants of the left lateral panel. For example, considered above in item 6.2 and on fig.22 model COLORSit ATX-L8032 has the same chassis, as the given case, but with the left lateral panel having ventilating windows.

Coming back to the given case, it is necessary to notice, that in a forward part of the demountable left lateral panel there is a vertical row of small ventilating apertures (fig.25 pos.4). These apertures do not play an essential role in computer cooling, therefore for an exception of penetration of a dust it is necessary to stick with their strip of an adhesive tape or, that is more preferable, a self-glued porous material in the thickness 2...5 mm.

The decorative forward panel of case COLORSit ATX-L8007 approaches for installation of the face filter. The basic air stream comes from below through a window (fig.25 pos.5) in the bottom part of the forward panel that suggests about vertical orientation of ridges (goffers) of the face filter. However in an internal cavity of the decorative forward panel there is high enough circuit board with sockets of ports USB and Audio (fig.25 pos.6), located horizontally. Therefore the face filter it is necessary to direct ridges (goffers) horizontally (fig.25).

Fig. 25. Installation of the face filter in case COLORSit ATX-L8007.

Thus, at the standard approach case COLORSit ATX-L8007 allows to establish only one small face filter. It it can appear obviously insufficiently for effective ventilation of the case. Fortunately, in the bottom part of a compartment for hard disks at the bottom of the case the additional ventilating window (fig.26 pos.1) is located. It can be used for installation of the bottom filter instead of the absent lateral.

Fig. 26. Installation of the bottom filter in case COLORSit ATX-L8007.

The bottom filter is established in the case on its bottom wall (bottom) (fig.26 pos.2) between lateral walls (fig.26 pos.3) a compartment for hard disks.

The maximum width of the bottom filter is defined by width d a compartment for hard disks and makes an order of 100 mm. The maximum length of the filter is defined by distance from the fan on a forward wall (fig.26 pos.4) cases to the panel (fig.26 pos.5) fastenings of expansion cards on a back wall of the case. The maximum height of ridges (goffers) the filter can reach several tens in mm. The bottom filter will not interfere to installation of a system board, since the compartment for hard disks is displaced on horizontal direction from a panel plane (fig.26 pos.6) fastenings of a system board. Therefore the filter located between lateral walls (fig.26 pos.3) a compartment for hard disks, will be removed from a plane of a system board. However at installation of a system board of forms-factors ATX its the lowermost slots PCI or PCI Express will be blocked by ridges (goffers) the filter, and installation in them of expansion cards will become the impossible. For system boards of forms-factors MicroATX this lack will not be shown, since they do not have 3 the lowermost slots PCI or PCI Express. Besides, this lack can be eliminated completely and for boards ATX if to use the bottom filter of small length. However, it will lower efficiency of cooling.

The established bottom filter will block the lowermost compartment for a hard disk, however it has no value since free there are 4 more compartments.

Since case COLORSit ATX-L8007 and considered above COLORSit ATX-L8032 (item 6.2 and fig.22) are based on the same chassis in last from them as installation of the bottom filter in addition to lateral and face is possible.

On fig.27 installation of filters in case Foxconn TH-61 is shown. The case conditionally approaches for installation.

The demountable left lateral panel of the case (fig.27) compels to use two small lateral filters instead of one big. It is connected with features of an arrangement of the relief handle (fig.27 pos.1). The first filter blocks a ventilating window opposite to the processor (fig.27 pos.2), the second filter - a ventilating window opposite to expansion cards (fig.27 pos.3).

Besides, in a forward part of the demountable left lateral panel there is a vertical row of additional ventilating apertures (fig.27 pos.4).

Fig.27. Installation of filters in case Foxconn TH-61.

In case Foxconn TH-61 it is impossible to establish neither the face filter, nor the face fan. It is connected with features of a design and an arrangement of constructive elements of the decorative forward panel (fig.27).

On the metal forward panel of the chassis the big punched ventilating window-lattice (fig.27 pos.5) settles down. However this window cannot be used for filter installation since on its surface the metal box (fig.27 pos.7) with ports USB, FireWire (IEEE 1394) and Audio from below is established, and from above - the plastic holder (fig.27 pos.6) LED indicators and on/off and dump buttons. If indicators and buttons settled down directly on the decorative forward panel, the holder (fig.27 pos.6) could be removed. It would allow to place the face filter on a surface of a ventilating window-lattice (fig.27 pos.5). Probably, that the manufacturer lets out some models of cases with such design of the decorative forward panel on the basis of the same chassis. And in the given case it is necessary only to suggest to stick all area of the punched ventilating window-lattice (fig.27 pos.5) with a self-glued porous material in the thickness 5...20 mm which will carry out a filter role. A similar material of a smaller thickness (2...5 mm) it is necessary to stick ventilating apertures on the bottom wall (bottom) of the case.

For cooling of hard disks it is necessary to use special coolers for hard disks. More in detail these questions are considered above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation») and item 5.11Face and rear (back) fans - a choice and installation»).

6.4. Installation of filters in elite cases.

Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01, Cooler Master Stacker RC-830, Thermaltake Armor.

On fig.28 installation of filters in case Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01 is shown. The case very well approaches for installation.

The basic lateral filter (fig.28 pos.4) is established on the demountable left lateral panel of the case, blocking the big ventilating window in diameter of 300 mm. At filter installation the available dustproof material (fig.28 pos.3) can be kept (that will increase filter service life) or to remove (that will raise efficiency of cooling).

At the bottom of the case it is possible to establish the bottom filter (fig.28 pos.6). Before its installation it is necessary to remove a protective metal lattice (fig.28 pos.5). However, if at the established filter distance d (fig.7) between a paper filtering element and a plane of a rubber sealant exceeds height of a protective lattice (fig.28 pos.5) it can to not be deleted.

The following filter (fig.28 pos.8) can be established on a fastening place optional fan CrossFlow Fan. Air fence will occur through a protective lattice (fig.28 pos.7).

Last top filter (fig.28 pos.12) is established on the top panel of the case after fan dismantle (fig.28 pos.11) and frame of its fastening.

Thus, case Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01 allows to establish to 4 filters simultaneously, two of which (basic lateral and bottom) can have the big enough sizes.

Fig. 28. Installation of filters in case Cooler Master Stacker STC-T01.

At installation of filters in the case it is necessary to execute small updatings.

On an internal surface of a metal grid (fig.28 pos.1) of covers unoccupied compartments 5,25" it is necessary to paste a self-glued porous material in the thickness 2...5 mm which will carry out a filter role. An exception make the covers three next compartments 5,25", in which the basket (fig.28 pos.9) with hard disks will be located. On these 3 covers to paste a material it is not necessary.

The fan (fig.28 pos.10) baskets (fig.28 pos.9) with hard disks is necessary for turning on 180 degrees that it did not involved air in the case, and on the contrary, extorted it from the case outside through covers three compartments 5,25". Thus, hard disks will be cooled by filtered warm air from within cases. It will raise their temperature, however, as has been noted above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation»), at a correct temperature mode in the case term of their service will not decrease almost.

On fig. 29, 30 installation of filters in case Cooler Master Stacker RC-830 is shown. The case conditionally approaches for installation.

Let's consider a case design. Demountable left and right lateral panels of the case have very big ventilating windows (fig.29 pos.1), closed by a metal grid. The same grid closes ventilating windows on a door (fig.29 pos.2), on the top panel of the case (fig.29 pos.3) and at the bottom of the case (fig.29 pos.4). Behind a ventilating window (fig.29 pos.1) the left lateral panel of the case the plastic framework is located (fig.29 pos.5), allowing to fix to 4 fans in the size 120x120x25 mm with dust filters. The covers compartments 5,25" (fig.29 pos.6) the elementary dust filters also contain.

Fig.29. Case Cooler Master Stacker RC-830 design.

It is obvious, that installation of filters by standard way in the given case is impossible. The backlash between the demountable left lateral panel of the case and a plastic framework (fig.29 pos.5) with fans is too small to place in it the filter. And surfaces of a door and the top panel of the case not flat, that also does not allow to establish on them filters. The bottom of the case with a ventilating window (fig.29 pos.4, fig.30 pos.1) appears a unique suitable place.

The filter can be established on the bottom panel (bottom) both outside, and from within cases.

At installation outside of the case the length and width of the filter can be maximum, and the height of its ridges (goffers) is limited by height of legs of a support (fig.30 pos.2).

At filter installation from within cases its maximum length can be limited by a basket (fig.30 pos.3) for hard disks. However, for an exception of this restriction the basket can be lifted on one compartment 5,25" above. The height of ridges (goffers) the filter at its installation from within cases can be more than at installation outside. The rigidity edge (fig.30 pos.4), fixed on the panel (fig.30 pos.5) for installation of a system board, should not prevent filter installation. It will simply turn in some back ridges (goffers) the filter.

Fig.30. Filter installation in case Cooler Master Stacker RC-830.

After installation of the basic filter on a case bottom in the case it is necessary to execute small updatings.

On an internal surface of the metal grids closing ventilating windows on demountable left and right lateral panels of the case (fig.29 pos.1), on a door (fig.29 pos.2) and on the top panel of the case (fig.29 pos.3), it is necessary to paste a self-glued porous material in the thickness 5...10 mm which will carry out a role of the dust filter.

Similar material of a smaller thickness (2...5 mm) are desirable for pasting on an internal surface of covers unoccupied compartments 5,25". An exception make the covers three next compartments 5,25", in which the basket (fig.30 pos.3) with hard disks will be located. On these 3 covers to paste a material it is not necessary.

The basket fan (fig.30 pos.3) with hard disks is necessary for turning on 180 degrees that it did not involved air in the case, and on the contrary, extorted it from the case outside through covers three compartments 5,25". Thus, hard disks will be cooled by filtered warm air from within cases. It will raise their temperature, however, as has been noted above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation»), at a correct temperature mode in the case term of their service will not decrease almost.

On fig. 31, 32, 33 installation of filters in case Thermaltake Armor is shown. The case well approaches for installation.

Having considered a case design, it is possible to come to conclusion, that a unique suitable place for filter installation is the top wall of the case. In this wall the big oval window is cut out, in which the decorative panel (fig.31 pos.3) with a ventilating lattice (fig.31 pos.2) is established, by the fan (fig.31 pos.5) and ports USB, FireWire (IEEE 1394) and Audio (fig.31 pos.4).

If to dismantle the fan (fig.31 pos.5), on its place from within cases it is possible to establish the small filter fastening on the decorative panel (fig.31 pos.3) and, probably, on the top wall of the case. However the sizes of this filter will be limited by a the nearby located baskets for hard disks (fig.31 pos.6) and for devices 5,25" (fig.31 pos.7).

Therefore more expedient placing of the big filter outside of the case on its top wall sees. It is possible to cover the established filter with the punched decorative casing. At such placing of the filter the decorative panel (fig.31 pos.3) should be dismantled and removed completely. Any suitable multifunctional panel established in one of compartments 5,25" can carry out its functions.

Fig.31. Installation of the top filter in case Thermaltake Armor.

However there is much more optimum decision. The matter is that for some models of cases company Thermaltake lets out optional demountable left lateral panels on which the big fan in diameter of 25 cm (250 mm) (fig.32 pos.1) is placed. Cases on which such panels (Thermaltake Armor with a 25cm Fan Side Panel) are already regularly established besides, are issued. Having dismantled this fan, on its place it is possible to establish the big filter (fig.32).

At such decision the top decorative panel (fig.31 pos.3) can to not be deleted. It is necessary to dismantle only the fan (fig.31 pos.5) and to paste on an internal surface of a ventilating lattice (fig.31 pos.2) a self-glued porous material in the thickness 5...20 mm which will carry out a role of the dust filter.

Fig.32. Installation of the lateral filter in case Thermaltake Armor with a 25cm Fan Side Panel.

The similar decision can be applied in cases Thermaltake Armor Extreme Edition (fig.33). These cases are intended for construction of dual-processor platforms AMD Quad FX. They differ from standard Thermaltake Armor only demountable left lateral panel on which two ventilating windows with pipes (fig.33 pos.1) are located. These pipes should be dismantled, and on their place to arrange one or two filters.

For this series of cases the metal demountable left lateral panel (fig.33d) without transparent windows is issued also completely. Application of such panel will make imperceptible filter use.

Fig.33 a,b,c,d. Installation of the lateral filter in case Thermaltake Armor Extreme Edition.

Irrespective of the chosen variant of fastening of the filter (fig. 31, 32, 33) on an internal surface of covers (fig.31 pos.1) unoccupied compartments 5,25" it is necessary to paste a self-glued porous material in the thickness 2...5 mm which will carry out a role of the dust filter. The Exception make covers of three next compartments 5,25" in which the additional basket with hard disks will be located. On these 3 covers to paste a material it is not necessary.

The fan of this additional basket with hard disks is necessary for turning on 180 degrees that it did not involved air in the case, and on the contrary, extorted it from the case outside through covers three compartments 5,25". Thus, hard disks will be cooled by filtered warm air from within cases. It will raise their temperature, however, as has been noted above in item 5.9The small face filter - impossibility of installation»), at a correct temperature mode in the case term of their service will not decrease almost. It is necessary to notice, that in most cases there is no necessity to use an additional basket, since the basic (fig.31 pos.6) allows to establish to 3 hard disks.

The ways of installation of the filter considered above (fig. 31, 32, 33) in cases Thermaltake Armor are completely similar and for other models Thermaltake constructed on the same chassis. These are cases Armor LCS, SopranoFx and series Kandalf (Kandalf, Kandalf with a 25cm Fan Side Panel, Kandalf Extreme Edition, Kandalf LCS).

7. The conclusion.

So, the idea of application of flat automobile air filters for protection against a dust of internal volume of the system block of the computer really appears interesting and economically very favourable. Advantages of application of such technical decision have been in detail considered in article beginning in item 2Advantages of the offered decision»). We will short list them once again:

1. High efficiency of protection against a dust.

2. Increase of reliability of work and substantial growth of service life of the expensive thermoloaded components of the system block (the processor, a video card, a power supply unit, a hard disk).

3. Low cost of the decision.

4. Possibility of problemless installation of filters on the majority of models of cases of type Tower. Installation is possible even on some models which, apparently, absolutely for this purpose do not approach. Herewith cheap models of cases with a standard typical design appear the most suitable to installation. Sales volumes of such cases are maximum. Taken by manufacturers, collectors and sellers the total profit on sales also is maximum. It means, what exactly on such cases installation of air filters first of all is expedient, since it is equitable to interests of end users, manufacturers, collectors, sellers, support services.

5. At installation of filters entering of any changes into a design and decorating of cases is not required. Filters can be simply pasted for its rubber sealants to metal panels of the case.

6. Low labour input of works on installation of filters and possibility of their transferring from manufacturers of cases on collectors of ready systems or even on end users.

7. Introduction of the offered technical decision in mass production will help manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and cases to raise essentially prestigiousness, competitiveness, a technical level, quality and reliability of let out production.

8. Possibility of extraction of considerable additional profit for manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and cases, especially at the correct advertising, marketing and guarantee policy (free advertising on packing of cases, sale of cases without power units, but with filters for the same price, the raised warranty periods for ready systems). I.e. for realisation of potential of offered idea there will be enough a minimum advertising and marketing support.

9. Loading decrease on the repair services which are engaged guarantee and preventive maintenance of ready systems and some components.

10. Simplification of performance of guarantee certificates and decrease in accompanying financial expenses for manufacturers, collectors and sellers of ready systems and some components (fans, systems of cooling, video cards, processors, system boards, hard disks, power units).

11. Possibility of refusal of preventive maintenance of system blocks or considerable decrease in its frequency, especially for corporate clients.

12. Possibility of use of cheap fans with sleeve bearings without fear of their fast failure.

Let's hope, that the idea considered in this article will interest manufacturers of cases and collectors of ready systems.

The author of article will be glad to consider possibility of commercial use of offered idea.

It is natural, that in again developed models of cases it is possible to provide at once possibility of use of flat automobile air filters.

It is possible to modernise already made models of cases a little also. For example, to change quantity, the sizes, an arrangement and the form of ventilating windows on the demountable left lateral panel of the case and the forward panel of the chassis. These changes should be made so that to provide installation of the cheapest filters of the most widespread standard sizes from the most mass models of cars.

The author of article asks to concern with understanding possible small discrepancies and errors in article. The part of cases was considered virtually under their reviews on the Internet, therefore discrepancies are inevitable. The author of article will be grateful for remarks and references to essential errors.
